Obituary

Dolores Eurania Voss Grisham was born September 11, 1934 to Wylie Andrew Voss and Norma Urania Voss at Hector, Arkansas. She was born at home, attended by a midwife. Thehome had an earthen floor in the kitchen, the other room was used as a living room/bedroom. The Voss family lived in this home for about seven years before moving into a new three room home that had wooden floors in ALL of the rooms. Upon graduating from Hector High School in the spring of 1952, Dolores moved to Little Rock, where she met Harold Grisham. He swept her off her feet, and they were married May 31, 1952.

To this union was born four beautiful children. Harold Dean Grisham, Jr (now deceased), Mark Alvin Grisham (who shared the same birthday with Harold, Jr, 2 years apart), Brian Edward Grisham, and the booboo, Jodie Lyn Grisham. According to Jodie, they saved the best for last. Dolores had finally gotten that girl. The children were hardly ever left with baby sitters. Dolores always said if she wanted to spank the children it was ok, but she didn't want anyone else doing so. Once, when Mark was in Junior High School, he and a classmate got into some sort of trouble. Mark got licks from the Principal, but the classmate did not. Dolores went to visit with the Principal and told him how it was going to be from now on, and they had better not give any of her children licks without her permission first. They obliged. Harold and Dolores always took the children with them on trips and vacations. If they were going somewhere, the kids went with them. When they got older, Harold suggested they travel alone, but Dolores said it was not as much fun without corralling some kids. Many happy memories were made camping and water skiing on Greers Ferry Lake, and floating the Buffalo River in rented canoes. Dolores was blessed with 13 Grandchildren, and 15 Great Grandchildren. Dolores loved her family.

Dolores stayed home as a full time homemaker until the children were all in school. She had various jobs such as a school bus driver, dump truck driver, and then went to work for what used to be Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. After five years of employment with SWB, one of her co-workers suggested she should take the test to go to work for the United States Postal Service. She did pass the test, and was hired by the USPS where she worked for almost nineteen years, retiring in June 2000.

Dolores was raised at the foot of the ozarks. There was no electricity in her childhood home until the year before she graduated from high school. There was no running water, therefore no indoor bathrooms. But as the saying goes, we can get by on a lot less than we have...and they did. Possessions were few, but there was a love of the gospel and music in the home. Money was in short supply, but enough was found to buy and "old" upright piano and pay for piano lessons. There wasn't much going on at home, so there was a lot of time to practice. Dolores always played the piano for every church she attended. She always said, "I'm not that good, but I'm dependable".

In 1959, Dolores and Harold joined the LDS Church. What a change, you see...she was brought up a Southern Baptist, and all those churches she played the piano for were known for their "jivy" stuff. The LDS hymns are to be played as it is written in the hymnals. Dolores sang alto when she got the opportunity, and she had never directed music. When she joined the LDS Church, she learned to direct and sing soprano. There always seemed to be a shortage of music people. Then, in 1962, the Grisham family moved to Cabot where the family attended the Jacksonville Ward. Of course, she was ward pianist. Then came the beautiful chapel with the beautiful organ. Dolores had never played an organ before. But she wasn't to be outdone. She went to Reed Music Co in Little Rock, bought a small organ and began to learn to play. She was in her forties when she did this, and she said it was very difficult for her to learn to play those foot pedals. Sometimes those pedals go down and all the other notes go up. It crosses your brain up to do this when you are learning. Dee (as she became known as later in life) was the ward organist for the Jacksonville Ward for 15 years, then she and Harold moved to El Paso, and she was organist for the Searcy Ward for 7 years. They moved to the 16th Section area, North of Cabot, built a new home, and returned to the Cabot/Jacksonville Ward where she became the Music Chairman for another 9 years. She also served as the Stake Music Chairman on two different occasions.

Also, later in life, Dee was a genealogist. As well as doing her own genealogy and helping Harold with his research. She never knew either set of her grandparents. Her father was old enough to be her grandfather when she was born, so his parents were gone by then. It was very fulfilling for her to learn about family history.

Dee was always "busy". If she wanted anything done, she usually did it herself. No one else could do it to suit her. She was a perfect model of the Type A personality. Girdle your loins, Harold. Here she comes!

In addition to her parents, Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dean Grisham, Sr.; son, Harold Dean Grisham, Jr. and grandson, Joshua.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jodie, Mark and Brian Grisham; sister, Mattie LaJuana Reynolds; twelve grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.
