Obituary

Marjorie May Sherrill, 87, of Cabot, passed away peacefully, to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 19, 2022.  She was born June 3, 1934, in Hazel Park, Michigan to the late Henry Alexander Poché and Irene Hammond Poché.  Marge was deeply loved by her family, extended family and closest quilting friends.  All who knew her were genuinely touched by the tremendous impact she had on everyone throughout the 87 seasons of life that God had blessed her with on her journey to heaven.  After moving to Cabot in 1999, Marge was a longtime member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church and loved attending worship services with her family and the many church friends she met there.

Marge definitely had a zest for life and deeply loved celebrating life events with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with her favorite niece and nephews who visited her regularly.  She always taught those she loved about valuable lessons she had learned through a plethora of her own seasonal life experiences.

Her profoundly strong work ethic was evident at a young age.  She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Berkley, Michigan.  She managed working 2 jobs while maintaining a high GPA in addition to cheering and playing basketball throughout high school.  She was quite an athlete and became an exceptional bowler in her younger adult years.  While she never pursued professional bowling, she once scored a perfect 300 in one of the many tournament games she played with her Pioneer coworkers.  She began working as telephone operator in 1968 at Teletype and when the company changed owners, she became one of the first computer data entry processors at AT&T.  For 27 years she actively served with the Arkansas Telephone Pioneers of America, continuously meeting various needs of many people within the community.

After retiring, Marge decided to start her second career and pursued the art of quilting. Quilting was only intended as a hobby to keep herself active - but she soon found it was an opportunity for her to continue serving others.  She became quite an accomplished quilter and shared her love of quilting with the younger generation by teaching various classes in quilt designs and techniques – ultimately teaching others to sew the tapestry of our lives together within the squares of a quilt.  Alongside other dedicated Cabot Nimble Thimble Quilt Guild members, she enthusiastically volunteered to help make over a hundred Quilts of Valor® sending them to our wounded warriors during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.   Through the hundreds of quilts that many soldiers, who were so far from home, received from this program, she was thankful to contribute in giving soldiers warmth and comfort during their stays in the hospital while recuperating from injuries they had sustained in war.

Her love in designing and fashioning beautiful and intricate quilt designs for her family and friends for the last 25 years definitely showed with each quilt she meticulously and lovingly handcrafted.   Marge learned that the threads she used that bind a quilt together must be strong - similar to the threads of life - and must be able to withstand many of life's ups and downs.  She knew that beyond the quilt keeping her loved one's warm, the importance of selecting the exact tapestry and color combinations of each quilt would matter to each recipient she was hand-stitching the quilt for as a gift.   The pattern and color selections she chose were always related to help celebrate a specific life event in the quilts she always gave away to those she loved.  Marge never sold her quilts-but the batting she tenderly placed inside each quilt for warmth reminds us of the love she had to continually give and comfort others in their time of need.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, Billy Sherrill; siblings, Richard Poché and Dorothy Roe; children Robert and Thomas Ballou; and a grandson, Nathan Kumpe.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Susan Weatherford of Ward, Laura (David) Langstaff of Cabot and David (Lisa) Ballou of Alexander; a brother, Joseph (Bea) Poché of Orlando, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews across the country who loved her dearly.

A celebration of Marjorie's seasons of life will be held during a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church.   A special thank you to the entire staff at Stonebridge Senior Living and Hospice Home Care for the compassionate and outstanding care they gave Marjorie.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Marjorie Sherrill be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Cabot, Arkansas. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore's Cabot Funeral Home.
