Opal Dean
Meharg Sharp
Jul 4, 1930 — Jun 17, 2025
Opal Dean Meharg Sharp, 94, of Cabot. To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die.
It is with great sadness that the family of Opal Dean Meharg Sharp announces her passing on June 17, 2025 at the age of 94. Jesus opened the doors of heaven to welcome Opal "Mama Herg" Sharp home. With outstretched arms, He has said, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Heaven received the best and she will be missed beyond measure. After suffering with dementia for the past few years, we are sure things were as clear as could be today as she entered the kingdom of heaven.
Opal ran an in-home daycare for 20 years and was known as "Mama Herg" to all of her little kids. She loved each and every one of them as though they were her own.
Opal was a member of MacArthur Assembly. The doors were rarely open without her being there. She lived her life serving God, and her desire was for everyone she knew to come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. She was a gentle woman, whose strong faith defined her life and impacted her family, friends and anyone else she met along the way. She leaves behind a legacy of love and tenderness that we will always remember. To have known Opal is to have known love.
She was an encourager, an inspiration, a role model and an example of a true woman of God. Her strongest ministry was that she was known as a prayer warrior, who prayed for everyone she knew and those she didn't know. She taught Sunday School for many years. Only God himself knows the number of people whose lives were impacted through her teaching.
Opal never graduated high school, but always wanted to get her diploma. At 76 years old, she took some correspondence courses and received the credits she needed to graduate. On May 19, 2006, along with the graduating class of Pangburn High School, she walked down the aisle and received her high school diploma. She was even on television. Her graduation was featured in a segment on Fox 16 new.
We will remember her as always stylishly dressed, as fresh at day's end as at its beginning. We will miss you, Mama Herg. To live in the hearts of those left behind is not to die. She fought the good fight, she kept the faith, she finished the race. Where her road ended, the streets of gold began.
A very special thank you to Phil and Debbie Taylor, who were faithful in visiting her while she was in the nursing home.
Opal was born in Pangburn, Arkansas, on the Fourth of July, 1930 to Yarnell and Edith Whitehurst. She was predeceased by her father; her mother and step-dad, Marion; husbands, Verdie Meharg and Gerald Sharp; her son, Eddie Meharg; her beloved sister-in-law, Peggy Whitehurst and her dear friend, Fred Dean.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Kathy Minton, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and two brothers, Austin Whitehurst and Harvey Whitehurst.
If Opal could speak to us today, she would say, "I have finally met my Jesus face to face. I am home at last with my loved ones and my friends who have gone on before. I've had a good life. Think of me with a smile and be happy."
There will be a walk-through visitation for Opal on Thursday, June 19, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Moore's Cabot Funeral Home, 700 N 2nd Street, Cabot, Arkansas.
