Peter Ernst
Herzberg
Nov 27, 1940 — Dec 19, 2023
Peter Ernst Herzberg, 83, of Cabot, Arkansas passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 19, 2023 while holding the hand of his only child, Eric Peter Herzberg, of Cabot. Peter was born in Lindhorst, Germany while World War II was still being fought. One of four siblings, life in post-war East Germany was very difficult and ultimately prompted his mother to attempt multiple escapes to the "West". Stories of how his mother pulled him and his siblings to freedom in West Germany using a coaster wagon were shared many times over the years. At the age of 18, Peter decided to look for a better life in America and legally entered the country with the sponsorship of his Uncle Horst Herzberg and Aunt Katie Herzberg. Shortly after arriving in America, Peter was drafted to join the United States Army and reported immediately and with great enthusiasm. The Vietnam War was still being fought and Peter was a devout anti-communist after living under Soviet rule after his hometown was controlled by the Soviets. Peter served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He did not get to serve in Vietnam as he originally hoped, but was stationed in France after he married Carmen Maria Chavez in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Peter lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before retiring to Cabot, Arkansas.
Peter is survived by his son, Eric Herzberg and daughter-in-law, Dana Herzberg; granddaughters, Hanna Kate Herzberg and Isabella Lauren Herzberg Swain (Seth); sister, Gerda Kostov; ex-wife, Carmen Radkowski and numerous friends and family members across the country.
