Sergeant Major Louie Herbert Lem, 73, of Cabot, died Friday, October 9, 2020. He was born February 16, 1947 in Houston, Texas to the late Joe Chow Lem and Thelma Cain Lem. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Cabot. Mr. Lem served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corp, retiring as a Sergeant Major after 24 years of service. He enlisted on February 18, 1964, two days after his seventeenth birthday, and in May of 1965, he was deployed to the Republic of South Vietnam. From 1966 to 1970, Sergeant Major Lem served at several duty stations in the U.S. In 1970 he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and received orders to return to South Vietnam for duty with the First Marine Division. Upon returning from deployment in the Mediterranean in 1972, Sergeant Major Lem received orders to Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, South Carolina. In October 1975 he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.  In November 1980, he was ordered to Okinawa, Japan and in December of 1980, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant. On November 1, 1985, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major while stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina assigned to the 2 nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 26, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461. During his service, Sergeant Major Lem earned many personal decorations and awards including the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with one silver star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation and Civil Action Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After retirement from active duty in October 1987, he continued to serve and shape the lives of young men and women as a ROTC Instructor at Parkview High School in Little Rock for 18 years.

Mr. Lem is survived by his wife, Gladys Say Lem; children, Jeffrey Brown of Palm Coast, Florida, Chris Brown of Tampa, Florida, Timothy Brown of Memphis, Tennessee, Louis Lem of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Melissa Snow of Cabot; grandchildren, Jeremy Brown, Amanda Brown, Ashley Stephens, Melody Brown, Milo Lem, Mateo Lem and McKenzie King; three great grandchildren; siblings, Joe C. Lem, Martha Ann Johnson, Jade Marshall and aunts, Shirley Cupp and Nell Samples.

Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Victory Baptist Church in Cabot.  Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. at the church with Brother Ben Leonard officiating. Burial with military honors will be 1:00 p.m. at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Moore's Cabot Funeral Home (501)843-5816.
