Velma "Jean" Davenport, 89, of Cabot, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 at her home. She was born March 29, 1934 in Austin to the late John and Hazel Griffin Shock. Jean dedicated more than twenty-eight years to Cabot Public Schools as a first grade teacher. She was a lifelong member of Cabot United Methodist Church and was faithfully involved in her church's ministries. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Women's Circle, served as women's adult activity leader twenty-five years and mixed adult Sunday School teacher for twenty-five years, was a volunteer for the Cabot United Methodist Church Food Pantry and also served as the communion prep leader. Jean was a missionary for Sager Brown, where she participated in relief fund work. In addition to her dedicated church work, she was a thirty year member of Happy Hikers Hiking Group, a volunteer at the Cabot Library, a member of AARP and the president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (a teachers' sorority). Jean loved to travel and took many Road Scholar trips. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband. George "G.L." Davenport; daughter, Donna Williams and brother, Buddy Shock.
Survivors include her stepson, George "Bub" Davenport; three grandchildren, John Williams, Jesse Williams and Kaci Belden; nine great-grandchildren, Connor Williams, Julia Dill, Caden Williams, Ellen Simpson, Audrey Williams, Decker Belden, Drake Belden, Tyler Williams and Viola Jean Belden, as well as numerous extended family members, former students and friends.
Visitation will be 12:30 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2023 at Cabot United Methodist Church. Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jacob Lynn officiating. Interment will be 3:00 p.m. at Old Austin Cemetery. Arrangements by Moore's Cabot Funeral Home, 501-843-5816. Family and friends are working to establish a Jean Davenport Memorial Scholarship. Make tax deductible contribution checks payable to Cabot Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and mail to PO Box 781, Cabot, AR 72023.
